Life Moves Fast These Days

life moves fast

The older I get the more I’m aware that life moves fast. When I was a teenager I often complained to my mother about how slowly time was crawling along, and that I’d never be a grown up.  She warned me that once you become one, it all goes faster and faster, and as usual, she was right.

While I wasn’t paying attention and other things were demanding my attention I missed the third anniversary of The Chef’s Last Diet. In June of 2013 I decided to (figuratively) put pen to paper and begin doing something I’d always wanted to do—write, and more specifically, write about food. On June 6th I published my first piece.

Over the last three years I’ve published 478 posts, and over 113 recipes. I can’t tell you the exact number of recipes because some are written in posts, rather than recipe format. I’ve cooked (and eaten) a lot of food, and shared all kind of stories, most, food-related. Some of you have been with me from the start (thanks!). It excites me whenever I get a new follower and it bothers me when I lose one. Someone recently suggested I reflect on how I’ve spent the last few years— a scary/good idea.

I won’t go as far back as 2008 when I decided to propel my life into chaos, or even 2011 when I was forced to. Since 2013, when I started this blog I’ve had four jobs, I’ve met countless new people, expanded my world, allowed myself to share things that took some courage to disclose, and tried to keep my house reasonably neat. My daughter has gone from being a kid to a young woman, I am fighting becoming an old one. I haven’t made a penny from my writing (yet) and I have never entertained giving it up. I only regret that I waited so long to start. I would say, waiting too long has been the common thread of the (few) regrets I have.

Over the years friends have told me which posts they have liked best, and I always find it fascinating which posts resonate with which people. Sometimes someone will mention a post they particularly liked, and I can hardly remember it. For this belated anniversary post, I’ll share with you my top ten favorites. If you’re new here I hope you’ll check them out, if you’ve been here all along, maybe just reading the titles will jog your memory. Please write and let me know which posts you especially enjoyed. It was fun for me to go back and reread these, and it reminded me again, that life moves fast.

My top ten favorite posts (in chronological order):

  1. Are You Judging Me?
  2. Cooking for my Mother
  3. How Did I Miss Fat Shaming Week?
  4. Everyone is Beautiful
  5. Chinese Take-out
  6. This is Not a Cheeseburger
  7. The Little House
  8. Frogs’ Legs
  9. How to Cook
  10. Plenty of Saffron
