Can’t Complain

CanYou know those people who when you ask them how they are say ‘can’t complain’? Don’t you admire them? Isn’t it awesome how they keep all their petty woes and first world problems to themselves? I think so. I am not one of those people. If you ask me how I am, you should prepare for an answer, or even a rant.

I’m aware you didn’t ask, but get ready, because I can complain. I am currently writing this post on my four year old iPad that is wont to crash frequently. It is the end of what has been a trying day, and I invite you to share it with me. Perhaps  my writing it all down will amuse you and relieve me. The proverbial two birds and all.

My day started out fine. There would be a lot of driving because I was working in Lancaster, an almost two hour drive each way. I don’t have to go there often, and most days it’s a pleasant trip.  When I got there I was late for an interview. I rushed in, accidentally turned on the heat rather than the air conditioning and sweated through the interview and my clothes.

I had two more interviews scheduled, but they were later, so I got started with the tasks at hand. Preparations for the day taken care of, I sat down to work. I turned my computer on, or at least I tried to, but nothing happened. There was a computer there so I could take care of the day’s business, and frantically search for possible solutions to my computer problem, but nothing worked.

When I called my friends at the Geek Squad they reassured me that I was still covered by the protection plan I’d purchased. The bad news was fixing it would take two to four weeks, which is ten years in computer-free life.  I was in Lancaster, and the Geek Squad there had no appointments I  made one near my house. This meant I’d need to leave work a little early because I couldn’t be sure how long the drive would take (two hours).

I got there in time for my 7:30 appointment.  By 8:00 I had completed all the paperwork and paid the $80 to save my data, in case of about ten eventualities. I was equally tired and hungry. I then had to go home and get my external hard drive and bring it back to the store; a fifteen minute trip felt like hours because now my head was pounding and I was so hungry I considered Chik-fil-A a dinner option.

I had a good bit of a piece written for today’s post, but it was trapped in my computer. They say I should get the external hard drive back by Thursday. “No rush” I said sweetly. I managed not to hurt anyone including myself, a triumph. As you can see, I can complain.

My boss may be able to loan me a laptop, I’ll get my hard drive in one more day, and in two weeks or so I will get my computer back. Even then I’m sure I’ll have something to complain about, because you’ll never hear me say ‘I can’t complain ‘.

Peggy Gilbey McMackin - Hope you have a better day Nancy! And that your computer issues will shortly be resolved. Bummer. I am admittedly not one to challenge ‘first world’ problems for I do believe wherever people live or how, all people suffer in some way, and not acknowledging peoples feelings doesn’t change in any way what individuals have no control over in any part of the world. So if it makes you feel better, no problem on the ranting about a tough day as far as I’m concerned. Cheers.ReplyCancel

Ellen - Oh, geez, when it rains it pours. I don’t hear too many people say “I can’t complain”, but I hear plenty of “fine” when asked about their day. I’m not sure which is the bigger lie, but don’t we all have something we can complain about? Hope your computer woes end quickly!ReplyCancel

Rowan - I love how you write when you let yourself just do it and don’t overprocess.ReplyCancel
