I wish you a Happy New Year, and I offer you a word, my word for 2015. I was fairly happy with my word for 2014 which was JOY. I think joy had a good run, though I feel like by December I was running out of it. A few disappointments, both personal and professional, getting […]

My Word for the Year » Chefs Last Diet - […] very important, and completely insignificant. My words since I began this blog have been Excelsior in 2014, and Joy  in 2015. This year I’ve been considering many words: restore, […]ReplyCancel

Shining My Flashlight on the Moon is the title of both a song, and a CD by Christine Lavin. That image even more than the lyrics, has stayed with me since I first encountered it.  When I was nine I went to sleep-away camp for the first time. I spent the first week feeling […]

Tina - Your post certainly built a connection with me, although I think that I am more gold than ceramic these days.ReplyCancel

nrlowell@comcast.net - Tina, I think we all reach that point eventually, and more gold than ceramic sounds pretty good to me!ReplyCancel

SHILPA GUPTE - I simply loved reading your post! Especially, because of the way you connect with your loved ones –shining your light at the sky your loved ones must be looking at. That is the way I connect with my mother. We look at the moon and we know we are thinking about each other! It touched a chord.ReplyCancel

nrlowell@comcast.net - Shilpa, Thanks so much for that comment. It seems the vast sky is a place we can meet and connect with our loved ones far away.ReplyCancel

Natalie - I love this idea of connection–and of having warning labels on people. 😉ReplyCancel

nrlowell@comcast.net - Natalie, I think the warning labels would definitely be helpful. Of course I’d want them for everyone except me!ReplyCancel

There are many traditions and foods considered lucky for the last supper of the year, including hoppin’ John, pork and sauerkraut, salt cod, and greens to name just a few. Many people will head out for a night of revelry and drunkenness, but we will stay home. My daughter and I always spend New Year’s […]

Oh end of year, oh Christmas day With all the things I want to say I spent a year of cooking madly Some came out great, some came out badly The seasons come the seasons go Crisp fall, hot summer, and so much snow Last winter seemed to never end It finally did in Spring […]

I have a huge, dream kitchen, but as capacious as it is, sometimes I feel like there’s no more room in there. When we moved from our little house into the house we’re in now my daughter spun around with glee and counted all the drawers and cabinets, “There are so many!” I’ve spent a lifetime […]

Vanessa D. - I’ve got a yearning for a Paderno Spiralizer but my kitchen is tiny. One cabinet for pots, one for canned/dry goods and plasticware, along with two upper cabinets and some shelves. If I want the spiralizer, I’ve got to make room somehow. My life is kind of like that right now too.ReplyCancel

      nrlowell@comcast.net - Vanessa,
I recently got a small spiralizer (kind of like a giant pencil sharpener). Making room can take some thought, some finagling, and some real intention, but I’m sure you will get there in all ways!ReplyCancel

Peggy Gilbey McMackin - Hi Nancy, fortunately for me, I am just not a waffle lover but I do know what you mean about finding kitchen space between all of those kitchen possessions we accumulate and love over the years. I always do a clean sweep each January though for anything that I don’t use, or hasn’t a purpose for me in the future. It looks like you got a good find identifying a home in Philly with a big kitchen and lots of cabinets!ReplyCancel
